I am back

Went down to Florida and shot about 3 hours worth of footage for HeliFreak.com. I usually when doing that much footage would have bought it in to Final cut. But... I managed to plow though it and do it ALL in iMovie.

I did find some new bugs I need to report but I am giving the whole experience a B+

Apple Online Tutorials for iMovie 11

If you are looking for Apple Tutorials they are kind of built into the online Help. I never saw them in there before myself till today so I figured I would let you know Winking

open the help page start reading then here and there will be sprinkled with video links. Sample:

[Video] Tutorial - Keeping your original SD card footage

Keeping your original SD card footage. I show you a few ways to make an iMovie "archive" and making an image of your SD card with MTS files. In Tutorials section or you can watch it now.

Converting MTS MTS2 files

I personally do not have a need for this but I see a lot of folks out there that do. If you need to convert your cameras MTS/MST2 footage to work with iMovie you can "re-wrap" it with ClipWrap. ClipWrap rewraps the video samples from your existing m2t, mts, m2ts files without re-encoding them. This means blazingly fast convert speeds and no image degradation.

People having issues with YouTube uploading

For those of you that are sure they have their username and password correct for a Youtube upload but it still will not upload via iMovie. Good news, you probably do! But...YouTube (that is owned by Google) wants you to sign in with your Google account name and password. You have to use the e-mail address from your Google account instead of your YouTube username to be able to upload. Now you know. Laugh

iMovie Photo caching bug

I ran into this today first time I have seen it. Wrong photo being displayed in Timeline.http://uimfaq.us/a5q3qA

Looks like iMovie will retain the last picture used even if you had deleted the previous project. Clearing the caches does fix it.

I will report this to Apple.

Cheap way of backing up your footage

I put this in my "store" because it such a neat idea. My friend just got one for backing up his footage. Just buy a lower end reliable hard drive then backup your footage to it. Undock it and file it away for safe storage of your video memories.

Importing YouTube Videos

Importing YouTube videos is not as hard as people may think it is or make it out to be. I will show you just how easy it is. How to import YouTube videos in to iMovie.

Audio not Syncing to Video

You know after 7 years of this audio syncing nonsense in iMovie I am starting to feel like a #&@&*!@# broken record about this problem. Sad thing is, the solution is the freaking same as it was back in 2003! Now that iMovie 11 is here we STILL have the audio not syncing to the video? Come on Apple how is it that Final Cut NEVER... EVER has this issue yet it continues on in iMovie and comes back like a bad penny?!?!?. Rant over.

Anyway here is the SAME thing that might fix your problem: Extract, or detach, the audio and make sure the audio is in sync.

[Video] Tutorial - Advanced Exporting

The folks over at Real World Video Video Compression turned me on to the X.264 encoder. I have been really impressed with encoder. This video tutorial will show you how to export your iMovie projects while still maintaining a good quality but, have a much smaller size.

YouTube HD playback

This is not really an iMovie thing but it is a nice little option if you have a YouTube account you upload to and watch videos from. (Like my tutorials for instance! Happy )

About page added

Added and "About Page" to the site to show you what qualifies me to tell you about iMovie. Laugh

[Video] Tutorial - Voiceovers

I show you how to do voiceovers in iMovie 11, selecting the best take, and show you how ducking works. I also let you listen to a $10 USB mic compared to a $100 USB mic. You can watch the video in the tutorials section or right here.

Yes, for the people that actually read this blog my new
Blue Yeti USB Microphone came in. Boy is it sensitive! I turned down the gain and even put a pad under that base but it would still pick up the, what sounded like POUNDING, on the keyboard. Luckily I also bought a mic stand with it on a whim, thinking I was going to be able to use it other places. So... I have a big mic stand and a giant blimp looking thing hanging off of it sitting next to me desk. See the things I do for you folks! Winking

[Video] Tutorial - Adding a Logo

iMovie 11, and 9 for that matter, supports Alpha channel (transparency in an image) so you can add a logo or other image to your movie. This very short tutorial shows you how. In tutorials section or you can watch it now.

Waiting on new Microphone

New videos will be delayed a few days. My next video was going to be about recording good audio and audio clean up. I was going to "lecture" you a bit about having good microphones the it dawned on me how horrible my voice sounded on these screen casts with my cheap $10 USB stand mic.

Now in all honesty that cheap $10 mic worked pretty good and I suppose I could have rigged up one of my "good" mics to the computer somehow but USB makes it so easy. I tried using a few other mics and a headsets, used for gaming, but they all kind of SUCKED. After some hunting around I finally decided on a
Blue Yeti USB Microphone. The new Yeti mic will take out some of the hum without me having to "sweeten" the audio, it has a built in gain AND a headphone jack so I can monitor my recordings. Now you guys will be able to fully enjoy my sweet sweet voice. Happy

YouTube posting fair warning

Watch the music you use in your videos!!! Even background music. This was in my mail this morning:

Dear DebianDog,

Your video, Justin Chi - Heli Invasion - Oct 2010, may have content that is owned or licensed by Sony Music Entertainment.

No action is required on your part; however, if you are interested in learning how this affects your video, please visit the Content ID Matches section of your account for more information.

  • The YouTube Team

So the video was pulled from Youtube! I actually am
disputing this one because this was nothing but some background noise from the event. The event is responsible for the copyright. I am sure you can hear the music and since I was using a good mic I am sure it sounds O.K. if the RC helicopter screaming at 2000 RPM's does not bother your listening pleasure. Geez... the Youtube "auto detector" is sensitive.

Anyway just be careful what you post on YouTube. If this was a video of family and friends, a birthday, Christmas, vacation, etc... I would be P.O.ed!

Remember if you need music go to Freeplay Music, Sound Dogs, Music Bakery, etc. or use a program like SonicFire or Garage Band to create your own. See
links page for site links.

Things not covered: "audio ducking", "beat matching", EQ, noise reduction. Look for that in advanced audio soon.
